With over 120 novelties, the next major release of our content management system SCHEMA ST4 will take off. If you have read the previous posts about ST4 2016 on the relaunch of the interface and the extension of the data models, you know that there is music in ST4 2016.
With my post today, I would like to make you drool a little bit more. Even well-known standard features have been further improved. And this will definitely be to your advantage.
How You Organize Your Project Update: Now It Is Freely Configurable
Those who work in ST4 with releases, know this challenge all too well: After a long editing cycle, a project has to be written from the system. However before that, the content of the project, i.e. the nodes contained, must be brought to the most recent status.
Since the requirements of our customers in this area are so diverse, we provide you with ST4 2016 the possibility to define the update behavior yourself in an extensive manner.
This is for one, reflected in the Common Options, which will provide you with more choices with regards to the default settings:
And also in the Variant Matrix, you can control in a very fine-grained manner, how the updates of the concrete projects will be arranged, according to your wishes.
New Organization Center – The Viewlet for Favorites and Saved Searches
With ST4 you can manage huge databases. To further simplify your work as a Technical Documentation department, we have decided to merge in one viewlet two central functions for the access to the data: The favorites and the saved searches.
As the screenshot already shows: With the shared viewlet, a sort of organization center is created and you can use this alone (my favorites, my searches) or together as a Technical Documentation department (common favorites, common searches).
Two more special characteristics: The Favorites do not only show you the previously marked nodes, they also show you the underlying structure. Additionally, the nodes can also be opened directly from the Favorites.
Similar dynamics are offered to you by the tree in the Searches. Every search that you have saved is shown in the tree as a folder. As soon as you open the folder, ST4 performs the search and then lists the results directly underneath the folder in the tree.
Therefore, even here you are offered new possibilities for the organization of recurring work in an efficient manner.
Metadata – Validation with Self-Configuring Test Routines
I hardly know any clients that work without them: Metadata have become, for managed databases, truly indispensable. Because of this, in ST4 it was already possible from the very beginning to create your own metadata fields.
In ST4 2016 we are taking an even bigger step forward with regards to metadata. You can now set your own validation routines for the metadata that you create yourself. And they are quite powerful. Three examples for this are:
- You can check numerical ranges with minimal and maximal values.
- For complex value structures you can set up a validation via regular expressions.
- And even dynamic validations are possible, if you use STPath expressions (XPath for ST4 objects). Then you can for example, test the validity of an entry depending on the enclosed node structure.
Therefore in this manner we have extended the metadata in ST4 into a further PIM functionality, alongside the dynamic tables or the flexible Excel import. In this manner, you can ensure data consistency in a new dimension.
Even More Power for the Layout Tools
Configuration of layouts and project-specific manipulation: This counts as one of the great strengths of ST4. And if you use one of the features that pertains to it already, you will be happy to discover the following novelties:
The Page Layout Designer (PLD) possesses with forms a new document type in the 2016 version. Likewise new on the output side, is the dynamically generated barcodes and the possibility to manage edition profiles for the image compression in web formats. Below an example of what the PLD looks like:
As Management functions, the new PLD offers a full text search as well as a Layout Comparison which presents visually the changes between the different layouts.
Even the Layout Recall has been boosted for ST4 2016. Newly, there is the possibility to adapt in a project-specific manner the flow ranges in the layout before generation. Thanks to this, you can for example scale and move flowing images or tables.
Finally, one more piece of information, this time regarding the Callout Designer. Here we have given a really detailed polishing. Lines and other objects can now be snapped together. In this manner for example, a marking line will stay always at the right point, even if the text is moved. The new magnifier function will be of particular interest for you. This will make it simpler for you to highlight the applied area in the cases where precision in a graphic is of crucial importance.
The Best for Last
That’s all for the third post on ST4 2016. However this is not everything. I kept our most important innovation for next week. I will reveal for now only this much: It has to do with a new and really powerful tool for layout configuration…and that is for online and mobile layouts.
